The Red Room of Pain

fifty-shades-of-grey-cac1d39d5bb5c20810b1314bcbf61dee35d8219b-s6-c30I’m only closing in on the halfway point of Fifty Shades of Grey now, after several months of not touching the book I decided that since I paid for it I had better read the damn thing. It’s truly proving to be a taxing experience. I would say that without knowing exactly what’s coming up when they reach the actual place that the idea of a red room with torture implements sums up this book pretty nicely.

The characters a stale and for the most part it’s easy to see how she drew inspiration from Twilight . The male lead reads like a control freak to the point that I am wondering how the women reading this book weren’t seeing red flags all around them. I would call the writing amateurish, but that would be a disgrace to armatures.

There are times when it’s clear that she needs a better editor and other times where it’s clear she lacks confidence in what she writes. Sometimes a passable attempt at not telling will be quickly followed up up by her explaining everything and thus telling.

I’m going to hold off the final judgment until finish the book. But I did finish Ten Little Aliens and I have to say that it’s to date the best Doctor Who book I’ve read.

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World

MV5BMTk4MDQ1NzE3N15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMjA0MDkzNw@@._V1._SX509_SY755_Still in San Antonio and watching Seeking a Friend for the End of the World with two of my friends…I have to say that I really don’t like Keira Knightley. I’m finding that she kind of ruins films for me. Not sure what it is about her. I just find her pretty obnoxious, though I can’t quite put my finger on what it is about her.

I was kind of enjoying the a movie at first, but then she showed up. I had hoped that another actress would be the lead. I forget her name, but she’s from Two and A Half Men.

Planning on finishing this out, but at the same time I am starting to see why it has a 6.7 on IMDB.

Ten Little Aliens

Doctor_Who_10_little_aliens_50thThis is a short post just to say that I am reading the Doctor Who novel Ten Little Aliens. It’s actually a First Doctor adventure and though I haven’t had much experience with that Doctor, I have to say that this book is fantastic so far. Doctor Who has never been this gritty and rough in the show. I’m sure I will have more to say after I finish it.

The Silent Stars Go By

Doctor_Who_The_Silent_Stars_go_By_50thThe Silent Stars Go By by Dan Abnett is the perfect example of a great concept book with a slightly poor execution. It’s the final book in the 50th Anniversary re-release of eleven Doctor Who novels, each one highlighting a different one of the Doctor’s regenerations.

I found the book to be engaging and a fun read. The second half felt a lot better put together than the first half and despite some small issues with how Amy and the Doctor were characterized, namely that they began to feel more like caricatures than in character, I would still recommend this book. The plot and the ideas in the book are very, very well thought out and the twist seems almost like an episode of the show except that it’s a bit darker.

That tends to be what the Doctor Who books do best, explore the dark corners that the show dare not tread in. I like that. I like the idea of being able to join my favorite Doctor at different points in his history and seeing the things he did between the episodes. I don’t think there are enough tie-in novels to current shows like that.

On the recommendation of a friend I’m reading another Doctor Who novel starring the first Doctor that’s also part of the same chain of novels. This one is called Ten Little Aliens. I started it and I have to say it’s already looking rather mature and impressive.

So, Kickstarter Actually Cares

PrintKickstarter released this blog post in reference to some complaints raised about a so called seduction guide. I actually talked about it in my last post. Well, in what seems to be becoming more and more of a thing of the past Kickstarter actually showed that they cared what their patrons and supporters thing when they responded to the blog post that I linked in my last post.

Their response can be found here.

The reason that I’m putting this response on here is because I don’t want to be known for pandering to one side of the story. These guys did the stand up thing and came out and addressed the issue head on. You might want to call it damage control, but it seems more like corporate transparency and caring about the service that they offer. At least to me it does.

So I just wanted to throw that out there.

You Should Be a Rapist

So some nerd has decided that he has the key to getting women in bed and seduction and so on and so forth. This isn’t some new thing for the internet or the writing world. I’ve seen at least a dozen different pickup gurus out there writing these kinds of books and trying to pilfer money from lonely guys who expect some get-laid-quick scheme to work in their favor. Most of the time the books spend a good deal of their page space talking women down, belittling them so that the man reading it can feel like he holds all the power. They often tell you to take a role like that with women to get their attention and to get them to respect you.

At their core, there’s a good deal of misogyny there. But most of them at least tell you that when a woman refuses your advances the gig is up. Even if they tell you to slow it down and back off some, most don’t say to press on—she really wants it. You know, because that’s basically a chart topper on the Rape Anthems soundtrack.

But in the link here this guy discusses what he saw on the Reddit by this book’s author.

This is a nightmare.
Watching the video, reading the description, it sounds fairly innocent but a little eye-roll inducing. It’s another book where some nerd, desperate to be liked by women (this is not an insult, we are ALL desperate to be liked by someone we want to have sex with) thinks he’s figured out some cheat code or check-list like routine they can run in a bar to make women sleep with them, as if women aren’t people but a series of subroutines or an obstacle course that they can optimize to get their dick wet as fast as possible. And he’s written that advice down! And he’s selling it! To you! You could learn his cheat codes. This is nothing new for the internet. In fact, a large swath of this book was published already on Reddit. What’s new is that he’s crowdfunding it.

And sure, you might think this is sad or dumb or that this guy is just another lonely dude talking to other lonely dudes who’ll head out into the night with their fedoras to failure, right? Not a big deal? Oops, turns out we’re wrong, because here are some excerpts from what he’s already put on Reddit –
5) Get CLOSE to her, damn it!

To quote Rob Judge, “Personal space is for pussies.” I already told you that the most successful seducers are those who can’t keep their hands off of women. Well you’re not gonna be able to do that if you aren’t in close! ”

“All the greatest seducers in history could not keep their hands off of women. They aggressively escalated physically with every woman they were flirting with. They began touching them immediately, kept great body language and eye contact, and were shameless in their physicality. Even when a girl rejects your advances, she KNOWS that you desire her. That’s hot. It arouses her physically and psychologically.”

“Decide that you’re going to sit in a position where you can rub her leg and back. Physically pick her up and sit her on your lap. Don’t ask for permission. Be dominant. Force her to rebuff your advances.”

Sex

Pull out your cock and put her hand on it. Remember, she is letting you do this because you have established yourself as a LEADER. Don’t ask for permission, GRAB HER HAND, and put it right on your dick.”

SO. Now I am no longer rolling my eyes.

This guy is no longer just being weird and creepy on the internet. Now he’s writing a book about how to sexually assault women, and he is using something I believe in (Kickstarter) to ask YOU for money to do it. I am offended as someone who believes in the platform, and more importantly I am offended as someone who believes women shouldn’t be treated this way, and that people who say otherwise CERTAINLY should not profit off saying they should.

This isn’t harmless. People come to these boards because they are scared of being humiliated, and they are saying to the world, “Tell me what to do, because I don’t know what to do.” And this guy has chosen to tell them, “You should be a rapist.”

There’s largely nothing we can do about people saying this shit on a place like Reddit – Reddit’s a mess for another time – but let’s get it off of Kickstarter. The project is funded in 10 hours – and unfortunately a lot of those are sleeping hours – but PLEASE report it to Kickstarter, please tweet @Kickstarter asking them to take it down, and PLEASE do not let something cool be used for the UGLIEST thing imaginable.

I just wanted to put this out there for others to see. This isn’t hard, I mean this shit is baby-town frolics—if a woman says no or tries to shy away from your advances then you stop. Hell, if a woman doesn’t seem to be into it and you have to question your advances, you should stop. There’s no excuse for forcing yourself on someone and no one owes you sex or any sexual favors.

Hard to Believe

tellallyourfriends1Ten years ago, I was still in high school and I discovered the band Taking Back Sunday when I was at a Blink-182 concert here in town. They were opening and I didn’t know them, had never even heard them mentioned. But I was blown away by the raw vocals and the style of the music.

I picked their CD up from the store later that week and I have bought every CD of theirs since. Yesterday they released an acoustic recording of their first album, the one I bought ten years ago, Tell All Your Friends now the old lineup is back together and I just have to say it’s pretty damn amazing to hear these guys perform those songs after the distance that they’ve come.

There’s something so simple about the feeling of an old song you know all the lyrics to being done by the old band in a new way. I was still just discovering music when all of this went down, but I don’t think any other band has remained a part of what I regularly listen to as long as this one.

Hardest part is believing that it’s been ten years.

The Last of Us

Last_of_UsFinished this amazing game earlier tonight and I have to say that I was thoroughly impressed with it through every moment. I don’t write about many games here, but this one makes a strong case for being above most others. But this game is story heavy and very well characterized. Those are some of my favorite things to find.

I don’t want to give a full review or even write about spoilers or the subject matter of the game other than to say that the game really makes you think about humanity and humanity becomes when it’s pushed to the edge. This game is what Walking Dead should be more like, but don’t mistake it for another zombie game. The enemies aren’t even undead.

The-Last-of-Us-InfectedIf you have a PS3, even one you don’t play often, this is a must by. Take my word for it. There’s very few people upset with this one and you need to see what I hope we see more of in the future. The visceral, gritty feel of the game is intertwined with moments of real artistry and beauty. That’s a tough mix to get right.

Beating a Dead Horse

B_Id_387613_Xbox_OneI wouldn’t feel right if I didn’t piss on Microsoft while they were down. And they are definitely looking down these days. I can’t say that I feel sorry for them because greed is what got us to this place. What they’re talking about for the X-Box One basically means an end to you owning your games. This is completely different than say a Kindle, which is doesn’t require you to use the internet except for getting the books.

The video game market seems to be the only media market where there’s this rally against used media. Yes digital readers create a problem for used book stores. But the old used books are always backwards compatible because they’re, well, books.

By making it so that any game only has one dedicated owner, you’re killing what made consoles so great. Who cares that you don’t get every scrap of profit that the game makes as it’s sold over the years. The same could be said about any other used thing. What makes video games so different? Especially considering that they cost more than movies or books.

When confronted with the idea that a lot of people don’t have high speed internet still, X-Box Executive  Don Mattrick had this to say: “Fortunately we have a product for people who aren’t able to get some form of connectivity,” Mattrick said. “It’s called Xbox 360.”

The interviewer then chimed in, saying “So stick with 360, that’s your message…?” To which Mattrick responded, “Well, if you have zero access to the Internet, that [360] is an offline device.” (source)

It really looks like they care.

What drove Microsoft to take all of these measures to ensure their profits wasn’t doing right by the fans and consumers. It was greed and companies who take these routes should be rewarded with this kind of scrutiny more often.

Books and Boobies: I Liked the Title so Much I Stole It

article-2336936-1A2EB227000005DC-690_634x420A few days ago I read something over on Hello Giggles about women trying to change how people viewed shiftlessness and gender by reading in the park topless. When I first posted the story on a forum I frequent I expected that more men would be excited for obvious reasons. Even men who aren’t particularly fond of women’s rights usually like breasts and if they were out all of the time, where’s the harm?

Well apparently these men are now worried that it will make them uncomfortable. Breasts are meant to be sexual and they shouldn’t be out for that reason. Here’s just a few of the things people responded with:

More idiots going topless.
The only people who support this are morons and perverts.
I like tits as much as the next guy, but this isn’t getting any point across other than how little self respect these feminist cunts have for themselves and others.
If guys don’t see you as equals with it on, they’re gonna see you as EVEN LESS with it off.

and

if you’re a fatass it’d harm my eyes

and

________ isn’t wrong, these women are idiots
Nobody wants to see your tits unless you’re part of the relatively small physically fit 18-30 female demographic, and suggesting that everyone should have to suffer the rolls and bags of outrageous fortune so that men can enjoy topless young women and young women can enjoy being topless
is just
Jesus Christ
Intelligence, perspective, self-respect and respect for others all severely lacking here.

and also

If a woman walked up to a man and touched his chest what would you think of it? If a man walked up to a woman and touched her chest what would you think of it? I don’t have a problem with walking around topless, or bottomless for that matter, but at the same time I believe some members in this thread are being hypocritical. If the situation was flipped I don’t think individuals would have a problem coming up with reasons why a man and woman’s chest should be treated/viewed differently.

and

Cause its sexualy related. The same reason I can’t walk around naked, the public does not want to see my black dick swinging everywhere, and the public does not want to see females tits while they play with there kids at the park. This is a society so what the people want does matter, and I can’t think of any reason why someone needs to expose there chest(male/female) under normal circumstances to begin with.
Men can walk around without a shirt as a mans chest is not associated to sex by the majority, although dont misunderstand a large number of people want men to cover up as well. Just not enough to make it a law.

The problem I’m having with all of this is that a lot of men seem to be uncomfortable with the idea of a woman shirtless around them, especially if they can’t touch her in the same way they might want to. There seems to be a sudden worry about the comfort level of men. The thing is that a lot of time when women are made uncomfortable they’re told that they’re being weak, they get ridiculed or told they’re being passive aggressive bitches.

We should tell these men the same thing. I think that over time, if this happened more often, it might start to change things a little bit and we might see some differences when it comes to how men view women overall. A lot of the reason we used to cover women up was because their body was seen as property and we still have this mindset that their bodies are meant to be enjoyed sexually for one person, but aren’t their own at the same time. Women are expected to act more out of sexuality and attractiveness than they are out of comfort.

And if you’re comfortable with your breasts out, who am I to say you can’t do that?
